Escape Room Review: An Enjoyable But Overdone Puzzle Game

January is a known dumping ground for bad movies and with Escape Room being the only major release this week, it’s pretty obvious that Hollywood isn’t even going to try this year. But is the movie based on the popular group puzzle game really that bad?

January is a known dumping ground for bad movies and with Escape Room being the only major release this week, it’s pretty obvious that Hollywood isn’t even going to try this year. But is the movie based on the popular group puzzle game really that bad? If you aren’t familiar with the idea of an escape room, basically a group of people are locked in a room and they have a short period of time to find a way out. Sounds pretty straightforward, right?

In the Sony version of a real-life game turned fictional horror story, six random people with their own unique stories are invited to play a game with the cash prize of $10,000 on the line. The game sounds like a good idea for some quick cash until the group discovers that the game is more dangerous than they realize and suddenly it’s not about money, it’s all about survival.

The biggest thing working against this movie is the fact that an oversaturation of the Saw franchise pretty much stole its thunder. The film is PG-13 so there are no gore or torture traps like in Saw but even then the traps in this film feel very similar to those movies. As far as the rooms go, you have to give credit to the production design as clearly there was great detail put into the look of every room and every trap. Overall, the movie is very enjoyable, the film’s ending is schlocky as they try to end on a more sinister note hyping up a possible sequel, but the film itself is not a bad experience. Escape Room has some design flaws, but a very convincing cast of characters makes this puzzle game a fun enough experience.
