Daniel 2 records the prophetic succession of kingdoms. Babylon corresponds to modern-day Iraq, Persia to modern-day Iran, Greece to modern-day Turkey, and Rome to Rome; these territories are currently Islamic where applicable.

In this reading the iron of the fourth kingdom is the continuing Roman element identified in Revelation 17 as the harlot (the Roman Catholic system centered on the seven mountains of Rome/the Vatican). The clay is the incompatible Islamic element identified as the beast and its ten-horn coalition (an Islamic caliphate). The mixture does not cleave; the horns that temporarily support the harlot ultimately hate her, make her desolate, and burn her with fire.
Verses 1–3
Nebuchadnezzar is troubled by dreams. He summons the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers, and Chaldeans. The wicked system first consults its own experts. The righteous are not yet in view, but God will insert them into the crisis.
Verses 4–11
The Chaldeans demand the dream first. The king threatens death and destruction of their houses if they fail. They confess that no man on earth can do what is asked—only the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh. The counselors of the unbelieving culture admit total inability. Only the God of heaven can reveal the matter.
Verses 12–13
The king decrees the destruction of all the wise men of Babylon. The decree reaches Daniel and his companions.
Faithful men living in a land of unbelief can be swept into the judgments of the wicked system.
Verses 14–16
Daniel answers with counsel and wisdom to Arioch. He inquires why the decree is hasty, learns the matter, and requests time from the king so that he may show the interpretation. The righteous counsel the wicked with restraint, wisdom, and a request for opportunity rather than panic or empty promises.

Verses 17–18
Daniel informs Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah and urges them to desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret so they should not perish. Before speaking to the wicked, the righteous seek God together. Their counsel rests on dependence, not personal cleverness.
Verses 19–23
The secret is revealed in a night vision. Daniel blesses the God of heaven: wisdom and might are His; He changes times and seasons, removes and sets up kings, gives wisdom to the wise, and reveals deep and secret things. He thanks God for making the king’s matter known.
Revelation comes from God alone. The righteous give Him immediate praise before they speak to the wicked.
Verses 24–30
Daniel stops the destruction of the wise men and is brought before the king. He declares that the wise men, astrologers, magicians, and soothsayers cannot show the secret, but there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets and makes known what shall be in the latter days. The secret was not revealed to Daniel because of any superior wisdom of his own. The model of righteous counsel: openly declare the inability of the world’s experts, point exclusively to the God of heaven, and refuse personal glory.
Verses 31–35: The Dream
The king sees a great, terrible image: head of fine gold, breast and arms of silver, belly and thighs of brass, legs of iron, feet part of iron and part of clay. A stone cut without hands smites the image on its feet, breaks the entire image to pieces so that no place is found for them, and becomes a great mountain that fills the whole earth.
The stone is of divine origin. It strikes the final mixed form and ends the succession permanently.

Verses 36–38: Head of Gold – Babylon
“Thou, O king, art a king of kings… Thou art this head of gold.”
Nebuchadnezzar and the kingdom God gave him are the head of gold—Babylon, corresponding to modern-day Iraq (currently Islamic).
Verse 39: Silver and Brass – Persia and Greece
“After thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.”
The second kingdom is Medo-Persia (modern-day Iran, currently Islamic). The third is Greece (modern-day Turkey, currently Islamic).
Verses 40–43: Legs of Iron and Feet of Iron and Clay – Rome, the Harlot, and the Beast
“The fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron… And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron… they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.”

Literally the fourth kingdom is Rome—strong as iron, breaking and bruising. Its final form (feet and toes) mixes iron with clay. The mixture is divided, partly strong and partly broken, and the two elements will not cleave. In the reading that connects Daniel 2 with Revelation 17:
- The iron is the continuing Roman element—the harlot system of Revelation 17 (“MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT… the woman… upon seven mountains”), identified as the Roman Catholic system centered at Rome/the Vatican.
- The clay is the incompatible Islamic element—the beast and its ten-horn coalition (an Islamic caliphate drawn from the earlier prophetic territories: Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Syria as king of the north, Egypt as king of the south, and related nations).
- “They shall mingle themselves with the seed of men” describes the temporary alliance in which the harlot rides the beast.
- “They shall not cleave” describes the failure of that alliance. Revelation 17:16–17 states the outcome: the ten horns “shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire,” God having put it in their hearts to fulfill His will.
The iron retains strength sufficient for the system to exist and to be ridden; the clay prevents permanent union. The final phase is therefore a divided Roman succession in which the Vatican system briefly allies with an Islamic caliphate and is then destroyed by that same power.
Verses 44–45: The Stone Kingdom
“In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed… it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever… the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands… the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.” In the days of the kings of the iron-and-clay phase, the God of heaven sets up an everlasting kingdom. The stone (divine, not human) destroys the entire image—including the mixed feet of harlot and beast—and fills the earth. The interpretation is certain.
Verses 46–49
Nebuchadnezzar falls before Daniel, acknowledges that Daniel’s God is a God of gods and a revealer of secrets, and elevates Daniel over the province of Babylon and the wise men. Daniel requests positions for his three companions while he sits in the gate of the king.

The righteous may receive honor after faithful counsel, yet they do not seize glory that belongs to God. They use influence to protect and position other believers.
Daniel 2 shows the righteous counseling the wicked by seeking God first, refusing personal credit, and pointing exclusively to the God of heaven who alone reveals secrets. Prophetically the image is the succession Babylon (Iraq), Persia (Iran), Greece (Turkey), and Rome. The final iron-and-clay feet are the divided phase in which the Roman Catholic harlot system (iron) mingles with an Islamic caliphate (clay/beast and ten horns). The mixture does not cleave. The horns that temporarily support the harlot destroy her by desolation and fire (Revelation 17:16). The stone cut without hands then ends every kingdom of the image and establishes the everlasting kingdom of the God of heaven. The dream is certain and the interpretation sure.
