I know what you were thinking when you saw the trailer for Girls Trip…didn’t I just see this movie a few weeks ago with white women? Well minus cocaine, Miami, and 3rd wave feminism…yes, yes you did. Girls Trip is nowhere near as horrible as Rough Night was because I actually didn’t tap out of watching it 30 minutes in. However, you are seeing the same issues with other black films in the past as the writing is styled more like a soap opera than a story.

Four longtime friends decide to meet once again in New Orléans for the annual Essence Music Festival and get the ‘Flossy Posse’ back together. Regina Hall is the successful TV personality, Queen Latifah runs a TMZ like Gossip Blog, Jada Pinkett Smith is the stay at home single mom, and Tiffany Haddish is that really ratchet friend you keep around not because of you like her but because she could be really useful in a fight one day. They decide to party like it’s 1992 and try to restrengthen the friendship they have lost over the years. Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah carry this film, but you can help but feeling that their talent should be served in a better film. Tiffany Haddish provides the film’s comedic relief and while she does get some genuine laughs, her act can get really tiring at times, especially if you know women like her character in real life. Regina Hall I always felt is better than her roles, but she never seems to catch the right break. The talent of Girls Trip is too good to do this type of low brow humor and seeing how the writer is a TV writer, the jokes are TV quality. You won’t hate Girls Trip, I doubt you’ll love it either.
