No…this is not The Onion…or The Babylon Bee…this is a REAL story.
The NFL reportedly plans to play a song titled, Lift Every Voice and Sing, also known as the Black National Anthem, prior to every season-opening game this year.
“Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” is traditionally known as the Black anthem. It was a song written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson in 1900 and set to music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson in 1905. It’ll be played first when the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans to kick off the NFL regular season on Sept. 10.
It is expected the players will stand for Lift Ev’ry Voice before protesting the Star-Spangled-Banner during the season. NASCAR was the first to incorporate the black national anthem at the beginning of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway last Sunday.
The league is also considering putting names of victims of police brutality on helmet decals or jersey patches, a person familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press.
