The House Review:

If Hollywood was run like the federal government, then I would be lobbying to completely defund the Department Of Comedy because clearly they are spending entirely too much money and providing very little laughs. The Department of Comedy that believes they know what is best for us and they are going to give us awkward improv, toilet humor, and drug use when all we really want is unregulated funny.

I can’t oversell this enough, Hollywood’s idea of funny is simply broken. We have seen the same style of comedy over and over and the novelty has been expired for at least a decade now.

Daddy’s Home 2 Review

Will Farrell is just not funny anymore and I honestly feel like I may have overestimated his laugh factor years ago. The days of a functionally retarded non-human shtick being funny are long over. All of the humor in the film is based on people getting hurt. If someone isn’t taking a ball to the face then you probably aren’t laughing because the written/improv comedy just doesn’t hit. Not only is the comedy largely a miss but the film has a knack for taking a joke that wasn’t funny, to begin with, and running into the ground with the hopes that you will laugh eventually (spoiler: You Don’t).

Present Day:

It’s the time shtick we have seen over and over again, nothing as changed. The only difference here than all the other Will Ferrell movies is that the writer and director Etan Cohen is so butthurt about President Trump, he made references (including one “but she won the popular vote” rant) THREE TIMES IN THE FILM. There is ONE good bit in the film involving a pro wrestler and MMA announcers that got a smile out of me, outside of that this film is too boring to be upset at, it is just a waste of time.

  1. Ferrel’s last funny role was Mugotu in Zoolander. I’m surprised nobody mentioned that a major issue with comedy now is that it’s controlled by an invisible censorship board which anyone who wants to work will obey implicitly – or their careers are over. Which is funny given that the last time Hollywood had a censorship board it was an official thing that could be criticized and is considered a form of fascism. Now it’s just in the air – if you cross it, you die in the business.

I’ll be covering that a bit in my blog, going old school into the Hays Code days, and pre-Hays Code days, and pointing out parallels to today’s society. The first real entry hits on Sunday. Then another entry will hit weekly, each Sunday, until I’ve covered topics all the way into the 1960s. I may slow down once I hit 1934.

  2. […] Korea, this is a film that is setting a lot of box office records. I know it may have seemed like Holmes and Watson murdered the genre of comedy to the point that it will need to have a closed casket funeral but I […]
