The only Christian churches the Chinese Communist Party permits to operate in the open are the ones that have accepted a political master.

That arrangement is not a neutral registration system. It is a religious body that claims the name and the standing of the church while opposing the congregations that will not place the government above Jesus Christ.

The New Testament already has a name for that pattern.

In the letter to Smyrna, Christ tells a persecuted assembly that He knows “the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan” (Revelation 2:9). The claimants in that city were not a foreign intelligence service. They were people who asserted covenant identity and religious legitimacy, then used the claim to slander and damage the church He recognized. The offense was the counterfeit standing joined to active opposition.

Read that way, the state-run churches of China are the modern form of the same thing. They do not say they are Israel. They say they are the church—the Chinese church, the patriotic church, the only lawful church. The Protestant vehicle is the Three-Self Patriotic Movement and the China Christian Council. The Catholic vehicle is the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association. Since 2018 both have sat under the United Front Work Department of the Party’s Central Committee, after the state’s religious-affairs bureaucracy was absorbed into that Party organ. Their origin is political.

The 1950 Christian Manifesto pledged the new structures to the Communist government and condemned missionary ties as imperialism. The “three-self” formula—self-governing, self-supporting, self-propagating—became, under an officially atheist regime, a requirement that the church cut outside loyalties and accept Party supervision.

What the Party calls Sinicization makes the hierarchy explicit. Christianity is not to convert China. It is to adapt to communist society under Communist leadership. Three-Self meetings open with the national anthem and study sessions on Xi Jinping’s speeches. Pastors have been ordered to insert Party slogans into sermons: the Four Consciousnesses, the Four Confidences, and the Two Upholds, which require upholding the Central Committee and Xi’s “core” status.

Around the Party’s centenary, clergy were told to work lines from Xi’s speech into preaching and to lead congregations in praise of the “great, glorious, and correct” Communist Party. In 2026 the national Three-Self leadership met to produce new catechisms on the Sinicization of Christianity, designed to shape Bible study around national identity and political loyalty. Crosses have been removed. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has documented cases in which images of Jesus were replaced with portraits of Xi or Mao, and Party slogans were posted at church entrances.

Seminary materials teach that patriotism means supporting the Party’s leadership and that only the Party can save China. That is not cultural translation. It is a rival confession. The apostle John wrote that the spirit of antichrist is already in the world, and that it does not confess Jesus Christ come in the flesh (1 John 4:3; see also 1 John 2:22). A system that keeps the name of Christ while requiring His church to treat an atheist party as the non-negotiable head, to preach confidence in that party, and to surrender the symbols of His person for the images of its rulers, is operating in that spirit.

Scripture calls Christ the head of the church, not the pope, and not the CCP (Ephesians 1:22; Colossians 1:18). It commands worship of God alone. It tells the apostles, when rulers forbid the gospel, that they ought to obey God rather than men (Acts 5:29). Romans 13, ripped from that limit and turned into a demand for absolute Party obedience, becomes a proof-text for the very lordship the gospel denies. No man can serve two masters.

The claim would be merely sad if it stayed inside the licensed buildings. It does not. The patriotic associations are the religious face of a hunt. Xu Xiaohong, chairman of the national Three-Self committee, told a state political body that Western forces use Christianity to destabilize China and that the country should bring “black sheep” to justice—his term for believers who refuse the official system. Police questioning released house-church members have told them that Christians outside the Three-Self body belong to a cult. The Regulations on Religious Affairs, tightened in 2018, make unregistered gathering illegal. The charges that follow are rarely “faith.” They are fraud, illegal business operations, and endangering state security.

The people on the receiving end are the independent Christians who will not accept the bargain. Wang Mingdao was arrested in 1955 after refusing the Three-Self movement as a political yoke. Pastor Wang Yi of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu was sentenced in 2019 to nine years after a declaration that he would keep preaching even under persecution. Zion Church in Beijing was hit by coordinated raids; its founder, Ezra Jin, was held 266 days, and other leaders remained in detention.

Early Rain’s remnants are still broken up in hotels and teahouses. Rights reports count thousands of house-church believers investigated or detained in single recent years, and hundreds of meeting places closed. Registered churches are not the raiding party in every case. They are the institution that defines the refusers as illegitimate, supplies the patriotic alternative, and publicly endorses the state’s case against them. That is how a body that says it is the church participates in the opposition the Smyrna letter calls blasphemy.

None of this is an accident of one administration. Communist doctrine set the terms. Marx treated Christianity as a narcotic and an obstacle. Lenin made atheism state policy and moved against the churches. The CCP inherited the framework. Mao’s campaigns and the Cultural Revolution banned public worship and imprisoned pastors. The reopenings after 1979 did not abandon the premise; they bureaucratized it. Xi’s Sinicization campaign is the same hostility with better filing cabinets.

A gospel that announces another King, a resurrection the state did not authorize, and a conscience that belongs to God rather than to the United Front, is structurally intolerable to a party that claims final authority over meaning, loyalty, and the future. Communism is not a neutral landlord that happened to quarrel with missionaries. In its own texts and in its Chinese practice, it is an enemy of the gospel.

Official rolls list on the order of 38 to 44 million registered Protestants and Catholics. Estimates that include unregistered assemblies run much higher. The census is disputed. The dividing line is not. The state churches exist by accepting a political head. The congregations that refuse are the ones dragged into detention centers. Christ did not tell Smyrna to join the body that blasphemed them. He told them He knew their tribulation and their poverty, and that they were rich.

He told them the adversary would use prisons, and that faithfulness unto death would be met with a crown of life. The overcomer, He said, would not be hurt of the second death. That word was not written for a church that had made its peace with Caesar. It was written for the church that would not.
