A few films every year presents a movie that is not as much as a film as it is as a reflection on growing up in today’s society.

Millennials get a bad rap for good reason, because despite growing up many still refuse to grow up. Karen Gillian, known for her roles in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Jumanji franchises, is one of the few actresses in Hollywood who still reaches out to do smaller films.
Being a member of the cool kids club isn’t the best thing for her career anyway because over the last few years, some of her best work has come from smaller-budget movies. It’s not often that you get a coming-of-age story from the perspective of a 30-year-old woman and it’s even rare when you get a good story.
The latest film from Indie giant Vertical Entertainment kills two birds with one stone with Gillian as the lead. ‘Late Bloomers’ is the story of a 30-year-old woman named Louise who has nothing going for her life at all.

Luis is a struggling musician who just broke up with her boyfriend and has no motivation or ambition in her life. After a pathetic display of trying to get back with her boyfriend she ends up breaking her hip causing her to go to Rehabilitation.
Because most people who are rehabbing their hips are twice her age, she is forced to get to know a stubborn mean old Polish woman named Antonina. Antonina Doesn’t have any friends for the obvious reason and her only caretaker is her 20-year-old granddaughter who doesn’t have the patience to deal with all that comes with her.
Louise decides to befriend Antonina As she gets to make a little money on the side being the only friend to an elderly woman. The two turn out to need each other at just the right time of their lives as both women are dealing with the loss of a key aspect of their lives and need each other for moral support.

On paper, this is a movie that shouldn’t work but the chemistry that Gillian has with her co-star makes it work. The character of Louise is a down-on-her-luck woman whose life has spiraled out of control ever since her mother was diagnosed with dementia which has left her nonverbal.
Refusing to deal with the physical state of her mother, Louise has cut herself off from everyone that she knows and has gone into a rut as a result. Antonina is an old Polish woman who is struggling with the fact that everything that she knew in love is either gone or has been replaced leaving her in a world she doesn’t recognize and finds little happiness in.
The film will hit audiences in the fields as it deals with difficult life situations such as loss, loneliness, and compassion. Karen Gillian gives one of the best performances of her career playing a character that most people would find annoying but has a well-written backstory that makes you sympathize with her struggles and roots for her redemption.

If you are a viewer who has either a troubled or emotional relationship with your mother or grandmother this film will hit you with more emotional weight than the average viewer. Anna Greenfield who wrote the script for this movie portrays the emotion of dealing with difficult family situations in a way that works from a personal level.
‘Late Bloomers’ do not have a big budget or over-the-top Hollywood theatrics, it is a simple character study of a woman who needs a much-needed reality check and learns to have compassion for their fellow neighbor along the way.
