It’s been a rough go for movies in 2024 so it shouldn’t be an extreme statement to say that Ordinary Angels is the best movie to come out so far this year.

It’s been almost a year since we’ve had a true feel-good movie in theaters. The average moviegoer is so used to feeling either dread or indifference with Hollywood Productions that when you get a film like this that manages to have an emotional impact, it does not go unnoticed.

Ordinary Angels is a story of a father who is dealing with the recent loss of his wife. Alan Ritchson who plays Ed, is struggling to raise two daughters all on his own one of whom is in desperate need of a liver transplant. As doctors project that she only may live another year, Ed runs into a woman named Sharon played by Hilary Swank. Sharon takes a great interest in helping his family and going the extra mile beyond the means that any stranger would go.

However, Sharon has secrets of her own. Sharon is an alcoholic working at a salon who has lost herself in Ed’s family as the only means to keep herself from drinking.  Sharon’s good deeds and good works do not negate the fact that Ed’s daughter is in desperate need of care and with his medical bills piling up to six figures he becomes a man desperate with very few options.

Ordinary Angels is a Faith based movie but don’t expect a lot of Biblical context to be in the film.  The story is about a father who goes to church and feels like God is cursing him after taking his wife and leaving him with a very sick child.  The film deals with the topic of loss and how believers can feel loss or distance from God in times of great struggle and suffering, almost as an allegory to the Book of Job. Outside of that the faith aspect of this movie is toned down.

The film is a story about two people who are in desperate need of support and who happen to find each other at the same time.  Hilary Swank playing the role of Sharon is a woman trying to pick up the pieces of her life after her own decisions have led to a Fractured relationship with her son. As a result, she forges a relationship with Ed’s young daughters as a means to make up for past decisions. Sharon is known for not taking no for an answer and she takes a critical role in the family’s recovery.

The movie is based on the true story that happened back in 1994 when the people of Louisville, Kentucky rallied around a father in desperate need of saving his child’s life. The town goes to such lengths To obtain a helicopter ride to Nebraska in the middle of a snowstorm In hopes of having an emergency liver transplant performed in time.

The film gives a great window into the positivity of humanity and how people will come together to help those in need at their worst moments. In an industry that promotes so much nihilism and anti-human segment,  Ordinary Angels turns out to be the perfect antidote for decaying society.

There are a few flaws to the film, the run time of 116 minutes stretches the storyline a bit too long, and some of the supporting casts are not given as much depth within that time frame as they should strengthen their presence in the film. As mentioned earlier for supposed faith-based movies the biblical themes are minimal.

You cannot ignore the fact that this film can reinstate an emotional faith in humanity that is desperately needed in such a trying time for audiences. Ordinary Angels is an emotional and inspiring movie that will be a tearjerker for some and a people-pleaser for others.  A film that makes you wish Hollywood would go back to making movies like this rather than the sea of Nihilism it produces weekly.

Considering your options at the movie theaters right now this is the best film that you can spend your hard money on. Ordinary Angels is the ultimate Comfort movie.
