Almost two years ago I wrote a review on the film Alienoid Which was a South Korean sci-fi fantasy film that at the time I labeled one of the most difficult films to follow of the decade. What happens when a film decides to be everything everywhere all at once?  you get this movie.

As someone who is a big fan of South Korean content, “Alienoid” is one of the least enjoyable South Korean films that I’ve seen in quite some time. It is a film that needs to learn the lesson that less is more.

At the time I said the film has way too much going on for audiences to follow the story. The story swings back from the 14th century to the 19th century following three different narratives within three different genres. The story was unorganized due to being a hodgepodge of genres that don’t mesh.

What made the film difficult to follow was that Alienoid was part 1 of a two-part series. Imagine taking an unorganized mess and splitting it into two parts and this is how we got Alienoid too.

A film that is far too complicated to give a normal synopsis of what is happening can be described like this.  aliens have come to Earth and they have hijacked the brains of humans.  while this is going on you have people mythical magic powers who can jump from the past to the present to uninterrupt the balance of human life. At some point in the movie, there’s something about a Divine sword that is needed to save the world And people are still using guns in the 14th century.

That is the most coherent synopsis you’re going to get out of this movie. All the problems that were present with the first film are present again with the sequel.  the film tries to mix elements of sci-fi, comedy, fantasy, action, and. pieces all into one film.  this turns the movie into an absolute chore and order to follow.

If you get up and go to the bathroom during this movie and come back you’re going to lose all sense of the plot and how we got here.  the constant jumps between periods also don’t help audiences.  you’re watching five different movies happen while being expected to understand all of them.

The film even Recaps the events of the first movie in the first five minutes of this film and it still doesn’t help the clarify The Narrative of this movie. There are too many characters to name and all of the backstories between the past and the present make the film difficult. The film induces sensory overload on the level of someone with autism. One of the few positives you can give the movie is the visual effects which are very well done on a limited budget And when you understand that this film is going to be a cinematic spectacle it achieves that aspect and what you’re looking at on screen.

When it comes to making sense of anything that is on screen is a different story.  when it comes to storytelling instead of trying to be an action comedy sci-fi and historical epic sometimes it’s better to just pick one and stick with it.

Alienoid 2 is the Cinematic equivalent of a 1,000-piece all-white jigsaw puzzle, after 2 hours, not will be no closer to putting everything together but you’ll wonder if it was worth the time.
