When I read a description for ‘Deep Water’ which stated that Ben Affleck’s character in the movie was a cuckold, I thought someone was really upset that he isn’t returning to play Batman.

But then 10 minutes into watching the movie, I realized that Affleck was in fact being cucked out by his wife…

Strap in, this is going to get ugly.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that polyamorous relationships DO NOT work no matter how many people in fringe media try to convince you otherwise. Some people would rather be miserable than admit something doesn’t work and stay in a toxic relationship that is clearly dead.

That leads us to ‘Deep Water’, a Hulu exclusive.

All I knew about this film is that Ben Affleck and co-star Ana de Armas had a brief relationship somewhere around the filming of this movie and now we can see the final product of these two cooked up before he ran back to Jennifer Lopez.

In the film, Ben Affleck plays the character of Vic. Vic is married to Melinda (de Armas) and the couple shares a daughter in a small rural town in Louisiana. Vic and Melinda are living a blatant lie. Melinda sleeps around with various men across the town and Vic just sits back and pretends to act like nothing is going on. The couple refuses to get a divorce so Vic puts up with his wife’s infidelity as long as she stays with the family.

That doesn’t mean that Vic takes these actions lying down. He tells one of her lovers that he murdered her previous boyfriend. The story floats around their social group and Vic begins to display actions of someone who knows more about Melinda’s boyfriends than he lets on. When Melinda’s next lover drowns at a party Vic is attending, the questions about Vic’s motives begin to become the talk of the town.

The fundamental problem with a movie like this is that you feel no sympathy for either of the main characters, they are both horrible people. Vic is a psychopath who would rather stalk and snuff out his wife’s boyfriends instead of walking away from his failed marriage and Melinda is just as bad. Melinda is emotionally manipulative and admits to cheating on her husband in an attempt to get a reaction out of him which ends up in people dying.

If both of these characters were killed in a car accident, the audience would cheer.

If you are holding your breath for a redemption story, you are going to pass out. The only thing remotely exotic about this movie is full-frontal nudity by Ana de Armas but as a couple, she has zero chemistry with Affleck. The acting isn’t even bad but believability isn’t the issue. The extremely poor script written by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson doesn’t give you one second to connect with any of the characters on screen.

‘Deep Water’ is Disney’s first exotic film in almost 30 years under their umbrella and audiences won’t be asking for anymore in the future. The film is the biggest disappointment to take place in the city of New Orleans since the 2018 NFC Championship Game.

  1. And to think this is Adrian Lyne’s first directing project since Unfaithful in 2002.

  3. I think the movie was the best twist on the cuckold fantasy. Unlike the book version it seems the wife and daughter accept that the husband loves to kill his wife’s suitors. Hilarious. In the book the husband is caught and goes to jail. In the movie version they continue as one happy family. LOL
