Is pregnancy-related deaths a sign of racism?

Queen & Slim actress Jodie Turner-Smith seems to believe so. In an interview with British Vogue, Turner-Smith opened up about her pregnancy with her husband Joshua Jackson. She confirmed the decision to have an at-home birth was largely due to what she called ‘systemic racism’ and the pregnancy-related mortality rates among Black women.

“We had already decided on a home birth because of concerns about negative birth outcomes for black women in America. According to the CDC, the risk of pregnancy-related deaths is more than three times greater for black women than for white women, pointing, it seems to me, to systemic racism.”

According to the CDC, about 700 women die each year in the United States as a result of pregnancy or delivery complications. Studies show that an increasing number of pregnant women in the United States have chronic health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and chronic heart disease. These conditions may put a pregnant woman at a higher risk of pregnancy complications.

Not sure how diabetes in America is racist but British actress seems to believe it is.
