When the Captain of the US National Team claims she’ll never sing the national anthem again, the only logical question is “Then why the hell are we rooting for you?”
As of this writing, the US Women’s National Soccer team are tied with the host nation France as the favorites to win the 2019 Women’s World Cup. The problem is, this team doesn’t believe that America is a country worth rooting for. To some, it may be lazy to simply say that the left hates America, but one thing can be denied. When the left isn’t lecturing us about how racist, sexist, and *Insert growing number of phobics here* the United States is, was, and will continue to be; they are very quick to denounce the entire United States of America whatever a Democrat isn’t running the country.
Case in point, Megan Rapinoe, the openly lesbian co-captain for the United States Women’s national soccer team, said that she will no longer participate in patriotic displays as a protest of the Trump administration. That’s right, the Captain of the US National Team is rejecting patriotism and America because of Trump.
“I’ll probably never put my hand over my heart. I’ll probably never sing the national anthem again,” Rapinoe said adding she views herself as “a walking protest when it comes to the Trump administration,” because of “everything I stand for.
“I feel like it’s kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it,” Rapinoe said. “Because I’m as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don’t get to tell me if I can be here or not. So it’s kind of a good ‘F you’ to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the Trump administration might have towards people who don’t look exactly like him. Which, God help us if we all looked like him. Scary. Really scary. Ahh, disturbing.”
As much as Rapinoe would like you to believe that Trump is the cause of her Anti-American protests, in reality, they started back in 2016 when she joined Colin Kaepernick in protesting the national anthem until the U.S. Soccer Federation required it’s players to stand for the anthem, a move that Rapinoe called ‘cowardly’. “I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties,” she said.
Well, when the Captain of the team doesn’t have favorable views of the country that she represents, it should not be a shock that other players on the team mimic the same sentiment. Alex Morgan, a forward for the USWNT, told TIME Magazine that she likely would turn down an invite to the White House if they do win the World Cup because she doesn’t stand for a lot of things the current office stands for (the team accepted the white house invite when Obama was in office in 2015). Currently, the odds of the entire US team turning down a White House are higher than them actually winning the tournament.
The women’s team have been plagued with headlines taking away from any relevance they have had on the field such as the story of Jaelene Hinkle who was dropped from the US national team last year after declining to wear a jersey to honor lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) pride month. Hinkle was not called up to the National team despite lacking depth in her position.
The women also made headlines suing their own United States governing body just three months before the Cup, alleging years of “institutionalized gender discrimination” because they aren’t paid as much as their male counterparts. The team even targeted FIFA for inequality despite doubling their prize money from the 2015 tournament from 15 million to 30 million. Players looked at the 400 million pot that the men got in last year’s World Cup as the justification of their discrimination.
Now of course, the 2014 Men’s World Cup generated $4.8B and distributed $576M in prizes vs. the 2015 Women’s World Cup generated $249M and distributed $15M in prizes meaning that the men not only drew more money but by ratio, the women actually DID get a bigger portion of the pie vs their male counterparts…probably why the odds of them winning this lawsuit aren’t very good.
The US Women’s team has made it very clear, they are NOT representing America in the 2019 World Cup. They aren’t even representing the governance body of the country they play for. No, this year’s world cup is all about gender quality, LGBT rights, feminism, and inspiring girls to fight back…and money (don’t forget the money). But if you as a fan are looking to root for your national team because that’s the kind of Patriot you are, you will be disappointed to realize that this team doesn’t share your sentiment, and they probably shouldn’t share your time.
