Remember when Video Games Reviews were helpful and actually talked about the games itself? Those were good days. What better day to bash the men and women of the New York Police Department than the 17th anniversary of the September 11th attacks? In an opinion piece/review that would make Colin Kaepernick proud, Deadspin editor Tom Ley took exception to the new PlayStation 4 title, Spiderman. While gamers are raving about the new game, Ley has a serious problem with it, he claims the game turns the beloved Marvel character into a cop, even worse, an NYPD officer which is unacceptable.

In a piece titled They Turned Spider-Man Into A Damn Cop And It Sucks, Ley writes the following

It’s dumb to expect video games to be responsible reflections of real life, but it is also impossible, for me at least, to not feel some ickiness about the game forcing me into cahoots with even a fictionalized version of the NYPD, an organization that routinely oppresses some of the most vulnerable residents of the city I live in.

The writer clarifies his statements by saying

Spider-Man doesn’t just help the cops by catching armed robbers and putting deranged super villains in jail, he helps them maintain a high-tech, citywide surveillance network. One of the ongoing missions in the game is to have Spider-Man repair NYPD operated (and Oscorp-constructed) surveillance towers that stand atop various buildings throughout the city.

Now Ley does say that he has only played the first couple of hours of the game at the time of this writing so he has not gotten very far in the story, but clearly, Peter Parker assisting the boys in blue for the opening missions was enough to write this disapproving article. Despite Ley’s objections to the ‘police state’ and arguably some personal beefs with the NYPD, it seems like most normal people aren’t really bothered by portraying the police officers as the good guys. To check out what the game actually entails, watch this walkthrough from popular Gaming Youtuber Cartoonz. You will see the game is actually quite fun if you aren’t an insufferable ideologue.
