UPDATED: Daniella Greenbaum, the writer of the article that was pulled from Business Insider’s website has quit the organization.

News Site Business Insider removed an article this week that defended Scarlett Johansson playing the roles of transgender characters in movies after the members of the site’s staff complained internally, according to The Daily Beast.

The report states that on Friday, columnist Daniella Greenbaum published a piece titled: Scarlett Johansson is being unfairly criticized for doing her job after being cast as a transgender man.

In the piece, she criticized the backlash to the decision to cast Johansson as a trans man in the upcoming movie, Rub and Tug.

“She’s a cisgender woman playing a transgender man. Most people would call it acting. Others are calling it insensitive.”

“The job of an actor is to represent someone else,” Greenbaum wrote. “Johansson’s identity off the screen is irrelevant to the identities she plays on the screen. That’s what she’s paid for. And if she does her job, she’ll make everyone forget about the controversy in the first place.”

Once the article was posted, several Business Insider staffers told The Daily Beast that some employees were offended by the column criticizing the complaints of the transgender activists.

The publication took down the piece on Friday, and appended an editor’s note to the page on Tuesday saying that “Business Insider removed the column because, upon further review, we decided it did not meet our editorial standards.”

The decision also prompted the publication to alter its own internal editorial policies.

Through a Business Insider’s spokesperson on Tuesday, Greenbaum said she disagrees with the decision to take down Friday’s post, saying she stands by her original piece.

  1. It’s a tricky situation. On the one hand, acting is about playing someone you’re not. On the other hand, the trannies do have a point in one regard, there aren’t any real trans actors getting any significant roles in major motion pictures. On the other hand, a lot of them aren’t very pleasant looking. On the other hand, unpleasant looking people get played by pleasant looking actors in makeup effects too often in my opinion when it would just be cheaper just to get the unpleasant-looking actor in the first place (same reason I hate it when they don’t hire an old person to play an old person).

But either way, I can’t say I’m not currently enjoying watching Hollywood fighting against the very monster they’ve created. They’ll get no sympathy from me when they’re tearing each other apart.

I miss the days of The Crying Game.
