Last Week, Disney announced the dates of their 4th Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios is planning to release seven films after Avengers 4 in 2019. After Avengers 4, The MCU now has reserved the following dates for future superhero movies:

May 7, 2021

July 30, 2021

November 5, 2021

February 18, 2022

May 6, 2022

July 29, 2022

Now while the nerd world is spiking the football at the news of brand new Superhero movies, I on the other hand finally feel the superhero fatigue that people warned me about years ago. Like many people, I have ridden this wave from the beginning with Ironman in 2008. When we got the first Avengers movie in 2012, I was hooked into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 2014 became easily the best year of the MCU as we got Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, two awesome movies that still stand out with their brilliance. Then Avengers: Age of Ultron happened and since then, my feelings about this universe mirror my feelings about The Walking Dead. I still watch it out of habit because I invested so much time into it, but honestly, I just don’t enjoy it anymore. Now don’t get me wrong, I am very excited for Avengers: Infinity War to see how this arc that they have built for 10 years will finally end. After Avengers 4, is anyone else really excited about MORE Marvel movies?

Let’s analyze Phase 4; we know that Marvel has at least 2 more Spiderman films in the works for Phase 4. Now I thought Spiderman: Homecoming was pretty good but I’m not sure about how this 50/50 booking with Sony is going to work in the future, especially when Sony has their own plans for the Spiderman universe with Venom and other non-MCU films planned. Next is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while I loved the first film, the second one felt like a cheap Hollywood sequel that simply tried to recreate the moments’ people loved in the first movie. Needless to say, I could pass on a third Guardians film. Outside of that, it’s pure speculation.

Disney/Marvel

A Black Widow solo movie is definitely in the works, now while the media claim this is the film we all have waited for, I think that statement is about 6 years past due. If you wanted a Black Widow movie after the first Avengers movie, I would buy it but 6 years later, that character has basically been used in a secondary role in Captain America films. Which is fine because she’s been great in that role but as a sole movie, I don’t see the draw outside of people who demand representation (Plus, Jennifer Lawrence may have already made that movie). Now Black Panther 2 is pretty much a lock at this point due to its box office success. The caution here is that after the events of the first movie, they have already gone to Wakanda and killed his main nemesis (spoiler alert) so if you ask where they can go with the next film, your answer may be limited.

What can Marvel do in Phase 4 that will make you want to keep watching? Is a sequel to Doctor Strange enough? Ant-Man 2 hasn’t even come out yet and considering how mediocre the first one was, is Ant-Man 3 a selling point? How about a Captain Marvel II? We don’t even know if we will like the character yet. Can you bank a sequel on a borderline C-list character? Of course, Marvel could wait out and see if they buy 20th Century Fox and add in the X-Men to the mix but that’s a Hail Mary at this point.

Disney/Marvel

I’m interested to hear what you are looking forward to or if you are even looking forward to it at all. For me, the Superhero genre is at last call. Hell, if Jessica Jones Season 2 turns out to be another dud for Netflix Marvel (Like the last three), I’ll be calling it quits on that universe as well. Maybe it’s Disney, maybe it’s fatigue, maybe it’s because I’m not as excited about this idea in my 30s that I was in my 20s but after the Avengers beat Thanos (Spoiler Alert), I can’t find a good reason to be excited about this universe past 2019.

One response to “Are You REALLY Excited For Phase 4 of The Marvel Cinematic Universe?”

  1. I’m still pretty optimistic about it even though thinking about Carol Danvers taking over as the face of the franchise is a questionable choice. Hopefully the character isn’t as politically painful as she is in the comics.

Since you literally asked for it I made a prediction post about it. Maybe that can revitalize some hope into you?
