Satan himself, transformed into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), appeared to Muhammad over 23 years, falsely claiming to be the angel Gabriel (Jebrīl).

This was the dragon’s masterstroke—the creation of his greatest counterfeit religion, Islam—a system that honors “God,” quotes Scripture-like language, preserves pagan Arabian rites, yet from its very first words denies the Father and the Son (1 John 2:22), rejects the crucifixion and resurrection (1 John 4:3), and inverts every doctrine of grace delivered through the apostle Paul.
What follows is the chronological record of the major documented interactions of this spirit (called “Jebrīl” in Islamic sources) with Muhammad, drawn from the most trusted Islamic traditions (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sīrah). Each encounter advanced Satan’s strong delusion (2 Thessalonians 2:11), building a religion that would one day produce the Antichrist (Mahdi) and False Prophet (Isa), whose followers will war against the returning Lamb (Revelation 19:19-20).

- Childhood (c. 575-577 CE) – The “Cleansing” of Muhammad’s Heart
While still a boy, the spirit appeared (often in the form of two men) and split open Muhammad’s chest, removing a “black clot” said to be Satan’s share.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1.8.345; Sahih Muslim 1.311
→ Satan began preparing his vessel early, mimicking a false sanctification while instilling terror—exactly opposite the gentle work of the true Holy Ghost (John 16:8). - The Cave of Hira – The First Revelation (610 CE, Ramadan, Laylat al-Qadr)
The spirit appeared in dazzling human-like form, violently seized Muhammad, crushed him three times until he could scarcely breathe, and commanded “Iqra!” (“Read/Recite!”). Muhammad fled in terror, convinced a jinn or demon possessed him, and contemplated suicide.
The first words forced from his mouth: Surah 96:1-5 – creation without the Son (denying John 1:1-3 from the outset).
Sahih al-Bukhari 1.1.3; Sahih Muslim 1.301
→ The violent squeezing and terror mark the spirit’s true nature (2 Timothy 2:26). No true angel of God ever assaults a chosen servant thus (contrast Luke 1:26-38 with Mary). - After the Pause (Fatrah) – The Second Revelation (c. 610-613 CE)
After a silence of months (or up to three years in some reports), Muhammad again despaired and contemplated throwing himself from a mountain. The spirit appeared filling the horizon, proclaiming “O Muhammad, you are the Messenger of Allah and I am Jibreel.”
Revelation resumed with Surah 74:1-5 (“O thou wrapped up in thy cloak, arise and warn…”).
Sahih al-Bukhari 1.1.3; 6.60.478
→ Satan reassured his terrified vessel, resuming the flow of antichrist doctrine. - Early Meccan Period (610-622 CE) – Teaching Rituals and Doctrines
The spirit appeared frequently, teaching the five daily prayers (initially 50, reduced to 5), ablution, and pagan rites rebranded as divine (kissing the Black Stone, circling the Kaaba).
Sahih al-Bukhari 2.26.689; various reports of Jibreel demonstrating salat.
→ Satan preserved pre-Islamic idolatry, baptizing it as “Abrahamic” while denying the true Temple in Jerusalem. - The Satanic Verses Incident (c. 615-617 CE)
While reciting Surah 53, the spirit caused Muhammad to praise the pagan goddesses al-Lāt, al-‘Uzzā, and Manāt as intercessors. The Quraysh rejoiced; later the spirit “abrogated” the verses and blamed Satan (Surah 22:52).
→ Satan nearly overplayed his hand, exposing the demonic source, then normalized abrogation—allowing his “eternal” word to change (contrasting Matthew 24:35). - Change of Qibla (621-622 CE, shortly before Hijrah)
The spirit commanded turning prayer from Jerusalem to Mecca (Surah 2:144-150).
→ Satan stole Jerusalem’s place, centering his kingdom on his ancient pagan shrine. - Isra’ and Mi’raj – The Night Journey (c. 621 CE)
The spirit took Muhammad on a night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem, then ascended through the heavens, meeting previous prophets (now subordinated to Muhammad). The five daily prayers were fixed. Muhammad saw the spirit in his true form with 600 wings.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5.58.227; 4.56.429
→ Satan mimicked a heavenly vision, inverting the true ascension of Christ (Acts 1:9-11) and establishing Muhammad above all previous prophets. - Medinan Period (622-632 CE) – Violent and Doctrinal Revelations
The spirit delivered the sword verses (Surah 9:5, 9:29), the denial of the crucifixion (Surah 4:157), and the transfer of the sacrifice from Isaac to Ishmael (Surah 37:100-112).
→ Satan hardened the system into conquest, preparing the ummah as armies for the Mahdi. - The Hadith of Jibreel (c. late Medinan period)
The spirit appeared in human form (as a man in white) before the Companions and questioned Muhammad on Islam, Iman, Ihsan, and the Hour—summarizing the entire counterfeit faith.
Sahih Muslim 1.1 (Hadith of Jibreel)
→ Satan’s public endorsement of his completed system. - Annual Ramadan Reviews and Final Revelations (until 632 CE)
Every Ramadan the spirit reviewed the entire Qur’an with Muhammad; in the Prophet’s final year, twice.
The last revelation: Surah 2:281 or 5:3 (“This day have I perfected your religion…”).
Sahih al-Bukhari 6.60.3
→ Satan sealed his counterfeit scripture, ensuring no further correction could expose the lies.

Thus, over 23 years, the spirit that called itself Jebrīl systematically delivered a religion that:
- Denies the deity, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ,
- Transfers the birthright from Isaac to Ishmael,
- Perverts grace into works, love into hatred, and liberty into bondage,
- Replaces Jerusalem with Mecca and the true Lamb with a false Isa.
This is the mystery of iniquity (2 Thessalonians 2:7) fully manifested—the dragon’s counterfeit church, preparing the world to receive the beast and his mark.“ Try the spirits whether they are of God” (1 John 4:1). The spirit that spoke to Muhammad never once confessed that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh as Lord and Saviour. It is identified.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20)
