China is officially home to the world’s biggest movie box office…all thanks to a global pandemic that THEY started.

Movie ticket sales in China for 2020 climbed to $1.988 billion on Sunday, surpassing North America’s total of $1.937 billion, according to data from Artisan Gateway. The gap is expected to widen considerably by year’s end.

Analysts have long predicted that the world’s most populous country would one day top the global charts given the heavy influence and cash output that China has given to United States studio to film and produce movies targeted for the region.

With the future of American film studios in jeopardy due to government shutdowns thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak with originated in Wuhan, many are spectating whether China will become the new king of movies moving forward as major studios are switching to streaming.

The major studios have postponed all of their biggest tentpole releases.  AMC Theaters, North America’s largest cinema chain which is also owned by a Chinese company, are warning that it could run out of cash by the end of this year and could shutter theaters as well as American jobs.

Insiders also worry that if Joe Biden doesn’t win the election, it could put Hollywood in a bigger hole as the Trump war with China could see them cut off from the region as many in Hollywood have alienated their home domestic market.

  1. Knowing Joe Biden, he’ll sell his soul to China. Besides, I believe Trump plans to investigate Hollywood for political corruption.

    1. If Trump investigates Hollywood for “political corruption” you will hear screams to the heavens about Trump killing the first amendment, and they’d be right. If Congress, for example, at Trump’s behest investigates Hollywood for financial corruption – which they are indeed guilty of – no problem. They would probably “get the message” if that happened. If Trump wins and wins both congress and the senate (I can dream, can’t I?) the effectively infinite copyright laws would be on the table. This would get the attention of the production companies double quick.

So if Americans are not watching Chinese blockbuster movies, this article is trying to argue that Hollywood depends on Chinese people watching their movies? And of all reasons, it’s because Hollywood alienated the domestic market? (with all their politics and inquisition style crackdown on half the political spectrum no less)

So why not try to regain the domestic market as its what China has been doing? Why can’t they choose to do what the Chinese studios are doing, ensuring that they are gaining the domestic market first?

    Somebody ask the real questions.

    1. Because Hollywood has spent years attacking the overwhleming majority of the US for the political stances. You can’t come crawling back to the US after they called 50% of the country Nazis for supporting Trump. This is why they need foreign markets now, the domestic box office is only 30% of their overall draw now.

      1. Correct. If you frequent any of the largest conservative news and opinion blogs, you find that a big percentage of the disqus commenters just won’t go to Hollywood movies anymore, period. Even movies with overt conservative messages. It’s like going to a store you liked but one day the manager slapped your face and threw you out. At that point it’s more a divorce than a change of taste.
