It has been a while since we checked in on our friends in the Comicsgate movement but the fight for an alternative to mainstream comics is still raging on.

Editor-in-chief of Bleeding Fool Chris Braly has teamed up with Todd Mulrooney and Eisner Winning Writer Mike Baron for their latest IndieGoGo project called Florida Man. Florida Man is the story of a redneck named Gary Duba and is based on the misadventures of real-life crazy people in the glorious Sunshine State.

As the IndieGoGo project currently sits on $4,294 of it’s $7,500 fixed goal, there is one site that wants nothing to do with the Florida Man project and that is Reddit. As reported by Bounding Into Comics, The ComicBooks subreddit has banned the promotion of Mike Baron and Todd Mulrooney’s Florida Man IndieGoGo from it’s 1.2 million subscribers.

Bleeding Fool posted the article for their latest project on the site which was promptly removed and saw their Reddit account banned from the subreddit for “Comicsgate support.”

When asked why he was banned, a moderator responded writing:

“Comicsgate support is not tolerated on this subreddit, such as pro-comicsgate websites like Bleeding Fool and comicsgate-lead crowdfunding campaigns like those from Chris Braly.”

The ComicBooks subreddit’s Rule 1: Be Civil bans support for Comicsgate.

It reads, “Racial, sexual, homophobic, or cultural slurs will result in a permanent ban. Do not disparage the differently-abled or threaten or incite harm against other users, creators, or industry professionals.”

It then specifically mentions Comicsgate, describing the popular movement as a hate group, “Any form of bigotry or support of hate groups (such as comicsgate) is not permitted. While debate and differing views are encouraged, please keep all discussion on-topic and do not resort to personal attacks. As a general rule, don’t be a jerk.”

Reddit has been no stranger to shutting down wrongthink, many communities over the years such as The Donald, which was at one point one of the largest subreddits on the site, fell victim to heavy censorship to the pleasure of Reddit CEO Steve Huffman.

“I wish we had quarantined them sooner because we would have made progress sooner. I admit we spent too much time with moderation teams that claimed to be doing their best while large numbers of users upvoted content that clearly broke our policies, which made it clear the issues were not of moderation, but of the community culture. Once we realized the quarantine was not working, we increased our pressure on the mod team to bring the community in line with our policies, open to both them either succeeding in this or failing and being banned. Instead, a number of the community members decided to go off-platform and create their own website, leaving r/the_donald in its current, near-dead state. And that’s fine with me.”

There are 42 days left to back the campaign and make sure that Florida Man sees the light of day, even if Reddit doesn’t approve.
