Rumors and reports are growing that the long-awaited sequel to Black Panther looks to be a “narrative transition” to a new female-centric era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Disney bigwig Kevin Feige has reportedly made his mind on making the upcoming 2022 Black Panther sequel starring Chadwick Boseman as a placeholder to mark the beginning of another phase, a phase that could see Boseman out of the role completely.

Reports state that Chadwick Boseman who has played the character of T’Challa since Captain America: Civil War in 2015, will pass the mantle of the ‘King of Wakanda’ to his younger sister, Shuri played by Letitia Wright.

Shuri will take over all the hero’s responsibility of Black Panther in the next installment, a move that has already occurred in recent Marvel comics where she becomes T’Challa’s successor when he goes into a comatose state.

The first Black Panther film was a financial and cultural success in 2018 ranking in over 1.3 billion at the global box office, however, it remains to see if the film’s target audience will be pleased with replacing the mainstay character with a strong female lead.

Phase 5 will commence with Black Panther II, followed by Captain Marvel 2, Ant-Man 3, Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Fantastic Four. Black Panther 2 will be directed by Ryan Coogler and the movie is scheduled to release on May 6, 2022.
