UPDATE: Universal Pictures announced on Saturday, August 10th, that the release of The Hunt has been scrapped citing concerns to Mass Shootings and Political Charged Violence

Blumhouse Pictures The Hunt is catching some heat this week for its timing and its subject matter. Producer Jason Blum’s film is described by media outlets as a story about a dozen “MAGA types” who wake up in a clearing and realize they are being hunted for sport by elite liberals. So one has to ask, is there a larger twist to portraying liberals as dangerous psychopaths? or are the filmmakers simply living out their darkest fantasies to mirror their real-life hate for Trump Supporters?

The filmmakers behind this movie all vocally despise President Trump and his supporters. As Breitbart explains, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum is a notorious Trump-hater who was booed off stage at last year’s Israeli Film Festival in Los Angeles after he blamed the president for the rise of anti-Semitism in America. Last year, Blum produced the film The First Purge, a film that depicted a Trump-like figure sending neo-nazi hitmen to kill black people in poor areas. The film also depicted conservatives as Russian associated KKK members and invoked imagery similar to the Charleston church shooting as Klansmen gunned down black people in a church.

The star of The Hunt, Ike Barinholtz, openly hates Trump and his supporters. Back in October, he blamed Trump Supporters for the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in where a white supremacist targeted members of the Jewish faith, despite the fact the shooter openly despised Trump for working with Jews.

“And if you support Donald Trump you should too because this shit is on YOU. IT’S YOUR FAULT,” actor Ike Barinholtz wrote. “Remember that tonight as you’re trying to go to sleep.”

Barinholtz’s Twitter is full of disdain for Trump and Republicans so it’s not surprising to see his name attached to a project like this. The Hunt’s director Craig Zobel along with it’s head writer Damon Lindelof are also progressives who are openly anti-Trump on social media. While the film press is selling The Hunt as a ‘satire’ of cultural issues, given the names attached to the film, you have to wonder whether Universal Pictures simply created a film that allows Trump-hating rich liberals to live out their fantasy of what they wish they could do to Middle America, if given the opportunity.

The trailer for the film is already being pulled from some networks for a different reason. ESPN states they will not air the tv spot for the movie, citing sensitivity to the recent mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. The real-life shooting could be a major hiccup for the film as the studio gave Blum a 19 million dollar production budget which is higher than most standard Blumhouse films.

It may be too early to know how much projection and hatred will be attached to this film, but given the brains behind the operation, you should have no faith that this turns into the deep meaning satire that the media is selling.
