Remember how excited everyone was when the news broke that Disney was buying 21st Century Fox and almost all of their assets? You couldn’t read one article that didn’t celebrate that fact that the X-Men were coming ‘home’.

How Will Disney Bring The X-Men Into The Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Disney-Fox deal means X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four can join the Marvel Cinematic Universe

It looked like every major news outlet in the country couldn’t stop glowing about how the X-Men were finally coming to the MCU, so much so that they rarely talked about how Disney now owns half of everything you watch as a result of the deal (more on that later). With so much hype about the X-Men going to Disney, you would think that the final film under the Fox umbrella would have at least generated some significant buzz and box office recipients right? right?

Wrong.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix BOMBED at the box office falling well short of projections and becoming the worst opening weekend for a X-Men film ever. According to Deadline,  Dark Phoenix’s $140 million dollar global opening is down substantially from the worldwide launches of X-Men: Days of Future Past ($262.9M), Logan ($247.4M) and X-Men: Apocalypse ($166.6M). Finance experts predict the film will lose an estimated $100M-$120M loss after ancillaries, off a combined production and P&A estimated cost of $350 million with reshoots.

If Dark Phoenix is any indication of fan interest, it seems like people are not even remotely interested in the X-Men at this point. If you were one of the people who didn’t care if a multi-billion dollar media conglomerate took over 50% of the entire film and television industry because you wanted see Wolverine fight Hulk in a movie, guess what? Disney said before the release of Dark Phoenix that they had no plans of bringing the X-Men into the MCU for ‘at least’ the next 5-6 years.

Meanwhile, Disney got the one thing they wanted all along…power. So far this year, Disney has controlled 39% of the market share of films which is up 11% from a year ago. Their next closet competitor is Warner Bros with 16%. Because of this, Disney now controls the majority of what you are going to see in theaters such as:  4 more Avatar films, 3 more Star Wars films, and 8 more Marvel Cinematic Universe films that will all see releases between now and 2027. Now only does Disney own Hollywood but they can now strong arm theaters into giving up more revenue and force them to run their films even longer, and don’t even think about giving Disney a bad review.

If you think staying home and avoiding theaters all together will save you, think again. Disney now owns a majority controlling stake in the streaming giant Hulu. Despite this, Disney will launch a new streaming service called Disney Plus which will release 5 new Marvel Cinematic Universe spin-off series and 3 new Star Wars based series which will be available when the service goes live in November of this year…Did I also mention that they own ABC and ESPN?

Dark Phoenix bombing at the box office means absolutely nothing to Disney in the long run because in the end, they got what they wanted, control over your entertainment which you willingly surrendered just so you could get another X-Men film featuring even more superheroes that they already own.
