A film so good, it already has an American remake in the works and it’s not hard to see why. With a summer movie schedule full of Disney sequels and superhero movies that don’t look very promising, a film based on a true story from South Korea wins big praise for an interesting concept and even better execution.

The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is a film about a complicated relationship between overzealous fame hungry cop (Kim Mu-yeol) Jung Tae-suk and a local crime boss (Ma Dong-seok, Don Lee) Jang Dong-soo in the city of Seoul. One night, our crime lord is stabbed by a man but manages to fight him off. It is then that Jung realizes that a string of stabbing murders are connected and there is a serial killer on the loose. Jung makes a deal with Jang to combine the forces of the criminal underbelly and the local police squad and find one of the most vicious killers in the country, the problem is, the two sides have very different plans of what they are going to do to him when they catch him.

The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is everything you ask out of a good film in the current age of cinema. A good setup, compelling characters, solid performances, and a world you can get lost in for two hours. The film is set in the mid-2000s follows the real-life events of a terrorizing killer and the effort it took to stop him. It is very intriguing to watch the police and criminal worlds come together to stop a common enemy that is just per evil. Kim Sung-kyu plays the cold-hearted psychopath who kills at random and indiscriminately. The plot keeps the tension high and the audience engaged through the very end while providing a few twists in between.

The film provides Hollywood like quality while managing to keep its focus on the central story which has become a daunting task for Hollywood filmmakers in the last few years. When it comes to quality, the South Korean film industry has been on a roll in the last few years and The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil is no exception. This film is currently out in AMC Theaters nationwide.
