With the financial success of Captain Marvel, Hollywood Studios may have just gotten the green light to ‘progress’ even further with gender representation in films. The next film that looks to trailblaze in the world of gender politics is…Godzilla: King of the Monsters? At least that’s according to one of the stars of the movie, Vera Farmiga who is claiming that the upcoming film will pass the ‘Bechdel Test’, a first for a Godzilla movie.

“The previous Godzilla really focused on the relationship of a father and a son (referring to Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Joe and Ford Brody from the 2014 film). At the heart of our film is this relationship between a mother and daughter. Godzilla: King of the Monsters “might be one of the first Godzilla that passes the Bechdel test,” said Farmiga.

For those who aren’t familiar with what the Bechdel Test is, The Bechdel test tracks whether two female characters have a conversation about something other than a man (yes, this is actually what the test is). The Bechdel test was created by famous lesbian cartoonist Alison Bechdel and has now become a feminist indicator for the active presence of women in films and other fiction, and to call attention to gender inequality in fiction in the last five years.

Now passing this test doesn’t make one a ‘feminist’ movie, films such as Captain America: Civil War, Furious 7, Jurassic World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron would pass The Bechdel test. Last December, Former Sony Pictures President Amy Pascal has already commented on the questionable study by stating “This is powerful proof that audiences want to see everyone represented on screen. Decision-makers in Hollywood need to pay attention to this.”

CAA’s Christy Haubegger added, “Women comprise half the box office, yet there has been an assumption in the industry that female-led films led were generally less successful. We found that the data does not support that assumption.”

  4. Other Godzilla movies have passed the Bechdel test, at least as far back as 1964: Ghidorah the Three-Headed Monster, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and Tokyo SOS to name three.

The original comic wasn’t even serious. It was a joke at the expense of the two women complaining. Anyone who has taken it seriously is an absolute tool.

  6. […] Godzilla: King of the Monsters has only drawn 340 million dollars meaning that adding in its marketing budget the film will likely lose millions which is not a good sign for a film that was supposed to set up a Godzilla vs King Kong film in a couple of years, perhaps you should have ignored the ‘The Bechdel Test’.
