The prevailing narrative created by the left seems to be that if something is offensive to say, then you are not allowed to say it. Some would argue that this belief is the antithesis of a free society but I’m sure those people would be smeared as alt-right for believing in the basic fundamentals of free speech. The one industry where the freedom to say whatever you want used to be the land of stand up comedy. I am old enough to remember the days where comedy was used as a vehicle to push the envelope and test people comfort zones. The late great comedian Patrice O’Neal once said that the idea of comedy is 50% of people laughing and 50% of people horrified.

Well, the horrified people have ruined comedy for the rest of us and those people are the political left. Over the last few weeks, we have seen a number of instances of comedians getting in trouble and causing ‘outrage’ based on what they have said in the context of a joke. Kevin Hart was just recently removed as host of the Oscars due to outrage about his stand-up comedy from nearly a decade ago. Chris Rock was recently under fire for a conversation he had with fellow comedians Jerry Seinfeld, Ricky Gervais, and Louis C.K. almost 8 years ago about saying the n-word. Speaking of Louis C.K., he is now back in hot water for a recent stand-up comedy bit he did because the left disapproves of who he made jokes about.

On Monday, the progressive media and celebrities savaged comedian Louis C.K. for a 2 minute bit he did at a recent stand-up show. The reason for their anger? He dared to make a joke about the Parkland Students and Gender Neutral kids. Performing at a New York comedy club, the comedian drew the fury of the left after making the following comments at his show.

“Young people are just boring. Fucking telling, ‘You shouldn’t say that.’ What are you, an old lady? What are you fucking doing? Yeah, that’s not appropriate.’ Fuck you! You’re a child! Why aren’t you finger-fucking each other and doing Jell-O shots? They’re like royalty, they tell you what to call them. ’You should address me as they/them, because I identify as gender neutral.’ Oh, okay. Okay. You should address me as ‘there,’ because I identify as a location. And the location is your mother’s cunt.” he said

Louis also made a joke indirectly knocking the March For Our Lives Parkland Students:

“They testify in front of Congress, these kids? What are they doing? You’re young, you should be crazy, you should be unhinged, not in a suit. You’re not interesting, Because you went to a high school where kids got shot? Why does that mean I have to listen to you?… You didn’t got shot, you pushed some fat kid in the way, and now I’ve gotta listen to you talking?”

Once the jokes went viral, the media and progressive personalities wasted no time blasting the comedian for making jokes about people they don’t approve of.

The Daily Beast who had to change their original headline calling Louis “a smug piece of shit” rewrote their headline to compare him to the alt-right…for his jokes.

The outlet wrote: His actions are inexcusable. His refusal to apologize would be flabbergasting enough. But to pivot to alt-right pandering is just plain disgusting. He’s shown who he is.

Make no mistake about it, the left is absolutely pissed that Louis C.K. has done what Louis C.K. has always done and that makes offensive jokes at the expense of his audiences. The only difference here from when C.K. did it years ago, is that Louis is no longer on progressives good graces and he is going after people they have to deemed to be beyond mockery. You see, not too long ago when C.K. was comparing Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, the left loved his brand of comedy. Now he’s considered a piece of shit because he made a joke about the kids that the left has celebritized to push their gun control agenda.

Over the years, many comedians have come out against doing shows at certain venues and certain cities because the audiences at comedy clubs have changed so drastically, it is not worth the heat of dealing with an offended audience. Back in 2015, Jerry Seinfeld famously got heat for saying comedians don’t like to perform at college campuses anymore because the crowds are too politically correct.

“I don’t play colleges, but I hear a lot of people tell me, ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC. They just want to use these words: ‘That’s racist;’ ‘That’s sexist;’ ‘That’s prejudice.’ They don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.”

Comedian Nick DiPaolo was recently punched in the face by an angry progressive woman who was so offended by his comedy bit, she sucker punched him after his show.

“That’s when a guy came over to me and told me that he loved the show but my daughter wants to punch me in the face. He didn’t even finish the word face, and she sucker punched me” Dipaolo said.

Bafta award-winning comedian Stephen Merchant has spoken out about the left policing what a comedian can and cannot joke about in public.

“This idea that we have to police ourselves, that we might say the wrong thing and upset someone or something. It’s not fun. It’s just not fun,”

Comedian Artie Lange has spoken out against the war against comedy.

“Political correctness is the direct enemy of comedy. Humor is to feel loose and not take yourself too seriously. You should be able to joke about everything race, religion; sexuality. Everything should be okay to joke about.”

Comedian Nimesh Patel was removed from the stage during a comedy show at a college campus because some students said his jokes went too far. Patel joked about a gay, black man in his neighborhood saying that being gay cannot be a choice, because “no one looks in the mirror and thinks, ‘this black thing is too easy, let me just add another thing to it.’” He was later removed from the stage and a group from Columbia University denounced his comedy and apologized to students.

“We deeply apologize for inviting him in the first place and bringing these comments into a space for inclusion and acceptance. We apologize for the hurt his words caused members of the community. We also apologize for being inarticulate as we invited him to leave…” the group added.

What is fascinating about comedians who are speaking out in favor of free speech in comedy such as a Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, and Jerry Seinfeld is that these are not conservative comics, they are liberals. The problem is they are a dying form of liberal. They are the type of people who believe that people should have the right to say whatever they want even if you don’t like it. This is a point that Bill Maher, another liberal comedian makes on his show all the time. However, liberals are now at war with progressives who don’t share their beliefs in freedom of speech. Progressives believe in authoritarian policing of speech and comedy that says you are not allowed to say things or make fun of things that they don’t approve of. Progressives believe that the liberal view of a Bill Maher and a Ricky Gervais is not far enough to the left for them. So now guys who were considered to be on the same side of the left are now being thrown under the bus in favor of a progressive ideology that is very much regressive in its nature. Now liberals like Louis C.K. are smeared as alt-right because he committed the cardinal sin of going after the left’s protected groups.

ABC

Where does comedy go from here? If left-wing comedians are now going to be the target of a permanently angry outrage mob, what will comedy look like if only progressives gets to approve of the subject material? Look no further than, late night television. Many media outlets accused Louis C.K. of “punching down” instead of punching up. Of course, this is an excuse commonly used by the left in today’s age of comedy where the only acceptable target is the likes of Donald Trump. Late night comedy has become a cesspool of far-left comedians trying to outdo each other by having the angriest takes on President Trump possible to get headlines and approval from media outlets and colleagues. The days of Leno entertaining everybody is dead and have been replaced with progressives calling Trump’s daughter a cunt, calling Trump supporters meth addicts, or simply just use your platform to call your political opponents “racist“.

This is what comedy is in 2019 under the strict regulations created by progressives. Comedy that says “as long as we hate the right people, you can say anything vile thing you want and call it comedy”. I mean by this logic, calling Michelle Obama a feckless cunt would be considered punching up considering her status but we all know if you were to cut and paste a Stephen Colbert rant against Trump and replaced the name with Obama, progressives would be demanding that sponsors boycott the show so that he could be pulled from the air. But as long as you compare Trump and his supporters to the Nazis, you will have the luxury of making jokes about having sex with kids and progressives will defend them as just jokes even if you aren’t a comedian.

HBO

Comedy as we know it is dead and the left killed it. The only question is now, will left of center comedians who are at the forefront of defending free speech finally take a stand a say “enough is enough” to protect the sanity of the business that made them stars in the first place? Or will everyone fold and allow the definition of comedy to be dictated by political brown shirts who will tell you what you can and can’t laugh at.

  1. Hopefully more reasonable people will start standing up against this. It’s a small minority of really loud people on the far left who do this kind of thing and then claim anyone who opposes their stance is racist, sexist, etc… Most people don’t agree with policing the speech of comedians or anyone for that matter, but most people are also afraid to stand up for that view in fear of being labeled as an “ist”. Thanks for sharing this, hopefully more people will stand up for what they believe in.
