Actress Ruby Rose recently posted on Twitter this message saying “I am looking forward to getting more than four hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next two projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.” Many believe that the reason she shut down her Twitter was due to backlash about her casting as Batwoman in the future CW TV show centered around the popular DC Comics character. Now despite the fact that many in the media seem to blame Star Wars Fans for actress Kelly Marie Tran leaving social media, a claim that has still not been supported by any evidence from the actress herself, There does seem to be evidence supporting Rose was unhappy with the social media response to her casting.
The actress received backlash for not being lesbian enough nor Jewish enough for the role. “Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian, therefore, she can’t be Batwoman’ come from?” she asked her followers. “It has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay.’ How do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.”
“When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group,” Rose continued. “But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more.”
Now while Rose hasn’t made an official statement about the shutdown of her Twitter, we have seen this type of outrage to a Hollywood casting recently, Scarlett Johansson was forced to step down from a role playing a transgender man after being attacked because she wasn’t a ‘real’ transgender man.
Ruby Rose currently stars in The Meg, a film that is currently #1 at the box office with 44.5 Million in its opening weekend.
