In an interview with Elle, Elizabeth Olsen said that she would like to have a new costume for Scarlet Witch in the MCU, preferably something less revealing.
On a new costume for Scarlet Witch: “It would just not be a cleavage corset. I like corsets, but I’d like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them—Tessa Thompson does, Scarlett does. I would like to cover up a bit. It’s funny because sometimes I look around and I’m just like—wow, I’m the only one who has cleavage, and that’s a constant joke because they haven’t really evolved my superhero costume that much. But then you look at where it started in the comic books and it was a leotard and a headband so…oh, it’s horrible, it’s so horrible. So at least they know that’s not cool. But then they made Wonder Woman, you know? And that’s what she’s in. I think of the costumes and what we have to wear—it’s more about iconic images because that’s what these movies are…. I think that’s the goal with the costumes, and it’s not representing the average woman.”
The outrage over this issue seems very manufactured. I understand that Elisabeth Olsen is a Feminist and this would bother her but I don’t understand her complaint because her costume is already conservative compared to the comic book version
Comic Verison
Two things with this story, one let’s address the sexualizing her character, I could buy into this premise if the MCU wasn’t doing the exact same thing with the men in the movies as well. There is a bit in Infinity War between Thor and Starlord where the joke is how good looking Chris Hemsworth is, that’s the bit. How many shirtless shots of Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, and Chris Hemsworth have we seen in these movies and I don’t see many people complaining about it but if you dress women in attractive costumes there is a problem. It’s okay to be strong and attractive.
Secondly and most importantly, we are talking about Superhero films here…they are not supposed to present “Realistic expectations” in these movies. This is a movie where a talking raccoon and a teenage tree fight a giant purple monster…this is not the avenue to be taking feminist stances. Don’t let the MCU suffer the same fate as their comics or people will tune out.
