Watching a stoner comedy on 4/20…I guess I should have known what I was getting into. 17 years ago, an independent comedy called Super Troopers was released in theaters. While it didn’t make a big splash at the box office and was hated by the critics, as the years went on, the film would build a cult following with audiences. Calls for a sequel had built for years and after a successful crowdfunding campaign, the wait was over and the guys are back. Having been fired from their jobs as police officers, the old gangs now work in construction but an international border crisis between the U.S. and Canada gives the old gang one last shot at redemption as all they have to do is smooth over the transition from Canadian land to US land without conflict.

Super Troopers 2 starts off with a hilarious opening bit including Seann William Scott and Damon Wayans Jr. but once that 10-minute segment is over, all the buzz is gone and you get your basic stoner movie with all the tropes. Drug use, sex jokes, nudity, swearing, and of course the character who is functionally retarded. Now I can’t pretend some of the jokes don’t hit because they do and were are genuine laughs to be had. But after 17 years of waiting, I can’t imagine the product will be worth the wait. It’s also just weird watching a bunch of guys pushing 50 try to recreate the same magic and gags they had in their early 30s, that and their obsession with male genitals gets awkward after a while.

Admittedly this film isn’t my thing as I’ve grown tired of the stoner comedy genre. If you love the original and are looking for that nostalgia kick, this should give you your fix. If you didn’t watch the first one, I honestly can’t say you are missing much giving a pass to this film.

  2. Good review. Personally, i liked it more than most. I really didn’t expect it to be anything else but a continuation of the first one. Meaning that it was pretty much the same (jokes, gags, and storytelling).
