When it comes to Batman Parodies, the best one going for my money is HISHE (How It Should Have Ended), so Will Arnett and this ensemble cast has a tough act to follow. The Lego Batman Movie is spinoff/sequel to the 2014 hit The Lego Movie. The movie is intentionally ridiculous as right away the film hits you with a lot of tongue-in-cheek references that many older fans of Batman will understand and many younger fans will have no idea about.

The animation is stellar as the teams at Warner Bros as well as Animal Logic combine for a strong and colorful presentation that I am sure a lot of detail went into getting just right. Will Arnett is a great comedic actor and his voice acting is on top of his game here. With Lego Batman, after a big opening extravaganza which is very entertaining, the film begins to fall into the habit of ‘hit or miss’ humor that makes it good but not great. You can only make so many ‘wink wink nudge nudge’ jokes before eventually, you will have no choice but to carry your own story and the plot begins to become more complicated than it needs to be. Joker (Zach Galifianakis) tricks Batman by turning himself in but knowing Batman wouldn’t trust him, he uses that lack of trust to make Batman send him to the Phantom zone so Joker can escape the Phantom zone and destroy Gotham (Sound like a stretch because it is). After a while, the film goes all over the place and I wonder if this series might run outta gas in the coming films (which they have A LOT of in the upcoming years). The Lego Batman Movie has its heart in the right place and for a younger audience, they will find it really enjoyable. There is still much to the film causal fans will enjoy as well but for me, while I did like it, I didn’t love it as much as the first film. Hopefully, The LEGO team can polish up their flaws before their coming releases or they could be run into the novelty of this series getting really old, really fast.
